General & quotes
Do you charge for a quote?
No. Consultations and quotes are free and there's no obligation. We'll look at the roof, talk through your options and give you a clear, detailed written quote.
What areas do you cover?
We're based around Wigan and work across the North West, including Bolton, Manchester, St Helens, Warrington, Chorley, Preston and Liverpool, plus further afield for larger projects. See our areas page.
Do you work on commercial and social housing properties?
Yes. We work for private homeowners, social housing providers and commercial clients, from single repairs to large-scale projects.
How quickly can work start?
It depends on the job and the time of year, but we move quickly. One recent customer had work start within a week of agreeing the price. We'll give you a realistic start date with your quote.
Do you tidy up after the job?
Always. Our customers regularly mention how clean and tidy the team are, including coming back after the scaffold is down to clear up.
Slate roofing
How long does a slate roof last?
Natural slate is one of the longest-lasting roofing materials there is. With proper installation and occasional maintenance, a slate roof can last well over 100 years, which is why it's known as the 'forever roof'.
Should I repair my slate roof or have it re-slated?
If the slates are sound and the problems are local (a few slipped slates, a tired valley, a leaking chimney), a repair is usually the sensible option. If fixings have failed across the roof, or there's widespread slipping and leaking, a re-slate is often better value long-term. We'll give you an honest view after inspecting it.
Can you remove a chimney as part of a re-slate?
Yes. Removing redundant chimneys during a re-slate is something we do regularly. It removes a common source of leaks and leaves a clean, continuous slate finish.
Will I need scaffolding?
For re-slates and most larger slate jobs, yes. Because we run our own scaffolding service, we plan the access and the roof together, so you deal with one firm throughout.
Can you match my existing slates?
In most cases, yes. We'll identify the type and size of your existing slate and source matching or closely matching material, so repairs blend in.
My roof is leaking right now. What should I do?
Don't go up on the roof. Move valuables and electrics away from the leak, catch the water if you can, and call us on 01942 316332. We'll arrange to get the roof made safe and repaired as quickly as possible.
How often should a slate roof be serviced?
For most homes, a check every year or two is sensible, plus a look after any major storm. Older roofs, or roofs surrounded by trees, can benefit from more regular attention.
Flat roofing
Is felt or rubber better for a flat roof?
Both are excellent when installed properly. Torch-on felt is robust and comes in a choice of finishes; EPDM rubber is a single seamless sheet with very low maintenance. We'll recommend the best fit after seeing your roof.
How long does a flat roof take to replace?
Most domestic flat roofs, such as garages and extensions, take a day or two, weather permitting. Larger or commercial roofs take longer. We'll give you a clear timeframe with your quote.
Can you replace the flat roof on my garage or extension?
Yes. Garages, extensions, dormers and bay roofs are among the most common flat roofs we replace.
How long does an EPDM rubber roof last?
EPDM is a long-life membrane. Manufacturers commonly quote lifespans of 20 years and beyond, and how long it actually lasts comes down to good installation and edge detailing.
Can rubber go over my old felt roof?
It's usually best to strip the old roof and check the deck underneath, so any rot or damage can be put right first. We'll advise once we've inspected it.
How often should a flat roof be inspected?
At least once a year is a good rule, ideally after autumn when leaves and debris have had a chance to block outlets.
Scaffolding & solar
Do I need a licence for scaffolding on the pavement?
If scaffolding sits on a public footpath or road, a licence from the local council is normally required. We'll tell you if your job needs one and how it works.
How long can the scaffold stay up?
As long as the project needs it. We'll agree a hire period up front and can extend it if the job runs on.
Can you supply scaffolding for other trades?
Yes. As well as for our own roofing work, we provide scaffolding for painters, renderers, builders and other projects.
Does my roof need to face south?
South-facing roofs are ideal, but east and west-facing roofs can still generate a worthwhile amount of electricity. We'll look at your roof's orientation and shading during the assessment.
Do I need planning permission for solar panels?
Most domestic installations fall under permitted development, so planning permission isn't needed. There are exceptions, such as listed buildings and some conservation areas. We'll advise on your property.
Should I sort my roof out before installing solar?
If your roof needs work in the next few years, it makes sense to do it first, so the panels don't have to come off later. As roofers, we can do both, with one scaffold and one firm.
